Brendan Gibbons: A Giant on the Court, A Warrior in Life
In the world of college athletics, stories of triumph and dedication often take center stage. Meet Brendan Gibbons, a towering presence on and off the court, who has captured hearts with his extraordinary journey as a middle blocker for the Judson University Eagles.
Standing tall at 6'5", Brendan Gibbons has made a resounding impact on the volleyball court for the Eagles. From his very first steps onto the court, he left an everlasting mark, earning him the coveted achievement of being selected to the 1st Team All-Conference in the CCAC during both his freshman and sophomore years. These honors, rarely bestowed upon underclassmen, are a testament to his exceptional skills and unwavering dedication, solidifying his reputation as a true standout in the sport.
Throughout his first two seasons, Brendan's presence at the net and relentless drive made him a force to be reckoned with. The 2022-2023 season further showcased his prowess, with Brendan exhibiting an impressive 207 kills to cap off his sophomore season. A standout moment from the previous year includes Gibbons' contribution of 13.5 points, which played a pivotal role in a memorable 3-2 reverse sweep victory over conference rival, Calumet St. Joseph.
However, Brendan's journey took an unexpected turn on August 8th when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Despite being at the peak of his athletic career, Brendan's unwavering spirit in the face of adversity became the focal point of his story.
Prior to his diagnosis, Brendan's health struggles became evident on August 6th when he experienced a series of discomforts—pressure and pain in his stomach and chest, difficulty breathing, and fever. Swiftly taken to the ER, Brendan was subsequently transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for thorough examinations. Following a bone marrow test, the diagnosis was confirmed, leading to the commencement of chemotherapy treatments the very next day. The duration of his hospital stay remains uncertain, but his determined fight is anticipated to span two and a half years.
"Brendan Gibbons, both an athlete and a symbol of resilience, exemplifies what it means to be a Champion in Character," says Men's Volleyball Head Coach Jacob Wallin. "His hard work and effort has been a joy to be around." In the midst of his personal battle, he embodies the values that the Judson University Men's Volleyball team and its community hold dear—faith, determination, and courage.
In times of adversity, communities rally around their own, and the Judson University family is no exception. Brendan's journey has gained support from the Blue Crew student body, the Eagles family, and well beyond. He is not just a player on the court; he's an emblem of hope, strength, and unity. His story serves as a reminder that the impact of a single individual can transcend the confines of the sports arena.
Facing this monumental challenge requires collective support. A "Give a Hand" donation link has been established in Brendan's honor to assist the Gibbons family during this challenging time.
