2023-24 Women's Volleyball Preseason Preview
Judson Women's Volleyball Preseason Preview
Elgin, IL - Team chemistry and a solid culture are some of the core values that are very evident when watching the Eagles women's volleyball team. In 2023, first year head coach Alyssa Serewicz-Wido will look to continue that for a program that has been widely well-known and successful for many years.
When you look at the roster, it is well balanced between seniors and newcomers, with talent across the board. Look for junior Alyssa Gerzel (Lake Villa, IL) to be dominant again. Gerzel won many JUICY Awards a season ago, as well as CCAC conference mentions. She led the team in kills with 446, and is a team captain this season. Number two on that list was, now fifth year senior Emmaline Davey (North Street, MI) with 326. Davey is also a team captain and received CCAC conference mentions. Senior Kenia Diaz Vega (Caguas, PR) has also been named captain for the Eagles in 2023. Head Coach Serewicz describes all three ladies as intense and passionate leaders.
Also named captain for this year is sophomore Yomailis Fernandez (Guayama, PR) for her outstanding team-focused leadership qualities.
The expectations for this group are simple, finish in the top half of the conference and receive another invite into the NCAA tournament. From there, anything can happen. "These upperclassmen have a lot of talent. They will lead us, and our younger players will be able to learn as well. We can compete with anyone out there," says Serewicz.
Coach Serewicz is easy to root for with her easy-going personality. She grew up in the area, Judson was always a part of her life, and when the Eagles came calling, it was a no-brainer to accept. "To have the opportunity to be a first year head coach at Judson is a blessing for me, and I am really excited to get this season going," says Serewicz.
She will continue along the lineage that coach Julia Fahy left of creating a quality culture, and team chemistry. The Eagles begin their season at home on August 19th, with matches against Kuyper College and Mount Mercy.
