Gerzel and Davey Take Over Offensively in Thrilling 5-Set Victory in First Round of CCAC Tournament
South Bend, IN In the first match of the CCAC Tournament, The Judson Women's Volleyball Team traveled to IU South Bend in search of victory. With each set ending within a handful of each other, the Eagles pushed for the maximum amount of sets to come out on top in extra points 3-2 (25-23,25-21,24-26,23-25,17-15).
In the match, Alyssa Gerzel received the most attempted kills out of any Eagles that stepped onto the court and she delivered. Recording 26 kills in the match leading her team, Gerzel was a large part of the victory for Judson. Adding a pair of service aces and several assists, she also racked up 24 digs from the right-back position leading in her second category. At the middle position, Emmaline Davey stood her ground at the net from an offensive and defensive standpoint. With a .400 hitting percentage, she went 24 for 50 on kills for in the match. Blocking all over the court, Davey was able to total 5 blocks with 1 being a solo and 4 being block assists. Having a chance to serve brought her a service ace as well.
Carolina Cosme returned to the court after a several-match break and finished 3rd for the Eagles in kill but led her position with 15. She also had 19 digs in competition. Her ability to perform on both ends of the court makes her a key addition to Judson. Yomailis Fernandez had her fair share of kills as well finishing with 10 in addition to her 10 digs. Lindsay Paulsen also finished with 2 kills of her own.
Libero Kenia Diaz Vega kept countless balls from hitting the floor as she finished with 19 digs. Although she was not the setter she was able to accumulate 7 assists in the match which is not heard of often in her position. Lindsay Lawlor stepped up her game and finished at 55 assists blowing her previous 49-assist game out of the water. She also contributed 14 digs.
Checking the quarterfinals off the list, Judon Women's Volleyball will move on to the Semifinals at St. Ambrose on Thursday.
