Eagles Fall At The Buzzer
Elgin, IL - The Eagles had the first game of the 2025 year, and similar to the ball dropping for the new year, fell at the buzzer on a floater that bounced high off of the rim, and dropped in.
Give the Trinity Trolls credit, they came out in the first quarter knocking down shots to build a lead.
With JU trailing at the half by 11 points, they rallied for a big third quarter. The Eagles took it to the Trolls 27-13 in the third quarter alone to take a three point lead into the final frame. Allyssa Potter knocked down two tree pointers, and Madison Carlson had 12 of her team-high 16 points in the 3rd quarter alone. Many of her baskets were quick layups off of steals. She had three steals in the game, all in the comeback effort in the third quarter.
But in the fourth quarter, the Eagles could not quite get the closing push to get to the winner's circle on this day. In a tied game, the Trolls knocked down the deciding basket with .04 left on the clock.
The Eagles have been playing short-handed the last few games due to injuries, and only dressed eight players in this contest. With perhaps extra minutes on each player, the effort is still showing through for the team. One player who is becoming a rock for the team is Brooke Heiman who tallied a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She is constantly battling hard, and has stiches on her chin to prove it.
Potter had 12 points, and added three more three pointers to her ledger. Bridget Grady also added 11 points.
Carlson led the team with her 16 points, and a tremendous effort going 7-16 shooting.
Cannot deny the hard work being put in by the Eagles, but the limited bench may be a factor at times.
The Eagles now go into a stretch of games where four of their next five games are on the road, all within the conference.
JU is back at it on Wednesday at IU Northwest.
