Eagles Celebrate Three On Senior Day
Elgin, IL - On this Saturday afternoon, it was Senior Day for the 2023-2024 Basketball teams. In a ceremony held, the JU coaching staff recognized three core members of the Eagles family in Sydney Novak, Jocelyn Mitchell, and Evelyn Martin.
Evelyn Martin has played in 23 games for the Eagles, and also played for the Eagles Women's Volleyball Team. As a two-sport athlete and an elementary education major, she has proven herself to be one of the hardest working, most reliable student-athletes on the campus of Judson University. Evie may have a sweet demeanor but she is a fierce competitor and is one of the leading rebounders for the team this season. She is working to pursue her career as a teacher.
Jocelyn Mitchell played in 72 career games for the Eagles, including 46 as a starter and has scored over 195 points. She is a team captain, and has been a steadying force on the team with her play on the court as well as the loving relationships she has built with her teammates off the court. Her teammates and coaches have relied on her from day one to be a team leader with her calm disposition and tireless work ethic. JJ will graduate this Spring with a degree in Psychology. JJ is also a member of the Eagles Softball team.
Sydney Novak has played in 59 career games for the Eagles, including 51 as a starter and scored over 383 points. Her energy and passion for the game and her teammates has been at the center of the Women's Basketball Program since she arrived on campus her freshman year. As a captain Sydney has been the definition of a servant leader in all aspects. She has a fire on the court that is infectious. She is a Communications Major and is set to graduate this Spring.
For the game itself, the Eagles played a really competitive first half, and did not make it easy for the Saints of Holy Cross. In the end, it was Holy Cross coming away with the victory on this day.
While it may have been about the seniors, the star performance of the afternoon came from freshmen Charity Anderson. She had team highs across the board with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists. Today was her first career double-double as she was a force on both ends of the floor. She was diving for loose balls, playing tough defense, and working hard in the post.
Alyssa Potter also added two more 3-pointers made to add to her season total. She is among the best in the CCAC in 3-pointers made this season.
The Eagles have four games remaining on this campaign with one final home game on the 21st.
