Judson Pitching Dominates as Eagles Defeat PSU-Dubois; Tie Dordt
Kissimmee, Fla. The Judson University Softball Team relied on impressive pitching as starters Bella Lodico and Kennedy Dietz each allowed only one hit in their respective complete-game outings at the Eagles Defeated Penn State-Dubois 4-2 and tied with Dordt 0-0.
Judson got on the board in the first inning when Sarah Herbert had an RBI groundout that knocked in Gabby Melchiorre. The Eagles extended their lead in the third inning with three runs as Gigi Velazquez plated CJ Adams on an RBI single, Andi Stephens drove in Herbert with a sacrifice fly, and Tatyana Chavez had an RBI double to left-center field to score Velazquez. The Nittany Lions scored their only two runs in the fifth inning. Judson had seven hits; one from each of the top six hitters in the order (Melchiorre, Adams, Herbert, Velazquez, Stephens, Chavez) and Mannon Amelio out of the ninth spot. Lodico pitched all seven innings, allowing only one earned run (two total), on one hit, while walking four and striking out four.
In the Dordt contest, the Eagles appeared to have fallen behind 1-0 in the sixth inning, however, the game was called prior to the inning finished, meaning that the score reverts to the last completed inning. The Eagles mustered six hits in those five innings (Herbert, Stephens, Annamarie Bucaro [2], and Naomi Sweeney [2]), but the Eagles did not cross home plate. Kennedy Dietz bettered Dordt's solid pitching with a one-hit performance in five innings of work. She had good command by only walking one batter and did not strike out any batters in the contest.
Judson (1-4-1) plays Bellevue and Marian (IN) on Thursday.
