Chumba Wins Great Lakes Challenge; Two Ladies with Top-10 Finishes

Chumba Wins Great Lakes Challenge; Two Ladies with Top-10 Finishes

Grand Rapids, MI. ---- The Judson University Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams participated in the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge on Saturday. Both teams celebrated significant milestones, as the women finished in sixth place, while the men finished in eighth.

On the men's side, Josphat Chumba won his first individual race as he beat 262 other racers to win the White Race with an 8K time of 25:55.00. Kyle Braund had a huge personal record with a time of 27:25.4 to finish 41st overall. Gage Fox finished with a total time of 28:02.30 to finish 84th. Running with him is Jonathan Jasso, who finished with 28:02.60 to finish 86th. Juan Villagomez had a 28:05.10 time to finish 90th, while Jaret Godinez had a time of 28:33.30 to finish 111th. It was the first time that the men's racers were all under 28:35 in an 8K since Head Coach Cam Knudsen took over to program two years ago.

The women had two top-10 finishers. Marie Mayer finished eighth (19:20.2, 5K) and Kasey Moreno finished 10th (19:25.0). Nayeli Cisneros ran her fastest time since freshman year with a time of 20:26.30 to finish 52nd. Eva Serrato finished 67th with a time of 20:44.50. Maria Alarcon had a monster last mile to finish with a time of 20:44.50 and finish 70th overall. The usual scorer for the Eagles had an off day, and Maria came up very big to fill that gap. Beth Rodriguez (21:42.10, 114th) and Laysha Hernandez (21:56.90, 126th) rounded out Judson's runners. The Eagles as a team defeated every CCAC team that participated in the White Race.

"I was happy with both of their races and that should give them confidence going forward," said Head Coach Cam Knudsen. "We have two weeks until our conference meet. We look forward to continuing to progress in the weeks ahead."

Judson's appearance in the CCAC Conference Championships is November 6 in Bourbonnais, IL.
