Men's Tennis Defeats NCAA D-I Loyola (MD) en Route to 2-0 start in Florida
Orlando, Fla. The Judson University Men's Tennis Team is off to a good start in Florida as the Eagles are 2-0, including an 8-1 win over NCAA D-III St. John's (MN) and a 5-2 win over NCAA D-I Loyola (MD).
The victory over Loyola was the first known NCAA D-I match and victory in program history. The Eagles won 5-1 against Bellarmine (KY) in 2017 (now a D-I school); however, the program was a D-II institution at the time of competition.
Judson was 5-1 in the singles competition as Alex Veltkamp (6-0, 6-1), William Barnes (6-1, 6-4), Chadd Kerrigan (6-2, 6-1) Joshua Bavich (7-6, 6-1) and Mathis Fauchet-Poli (7-5, 6-2) were all victorious. Judson swept the doubles competition as Barnes and Veltkamp won 8-3 in the #1 slot. Julius Fortun and Kerrigan won second doubles 8-6, while Bavich and Fauchet-Poli took third doubles 8-4.
Judson took four of the six singles competitions in the Loyola match. Veltkamp (6-4, 3-6, 10-1), Barnes (6-3, 6-0), Kerrigan (6-4, 6-3), and Fauchet Poli (6-1, 6-3) were the victors. In doubles play, Judson took two of the three matches to earn the doubles point. Veltkamp and Barnes took top doubles 6-4, while Max Fortun and Chadd Kerrigan won second doubles 6-4.
Judson (5-3) faces Wayne State and Warner on Thursday to finish their Florida trip.
