Eagles Win NCCAA National Championship
Kissimmee, FL - It has been a long, fun, grueling, exciting week for Eagles's soccer. A day after the Women's Team became NCCAA National Runner Ups, the Men's team took their shot at becoming champions.
The common denominator this week has been the Eagles ability to get off to good starts. JU was playing fast, and ten minutes in, co-captain Gabriel Trevisan had a nice look at a goal, but was denied by a diving attempt. But in the 23rd minute, Trevisan would not be denied as a deflected ball found its way to the senior who was able to get it to the back of the net for a 1-0 Judson lead.
For Trevisan, it was his third goal of the season in a year that was mixed with injuries at times. But still, the co-captain pushed on. He also scored a goal in the semi-final round, so the Kissimmee weather certainly treated the senior nicely this week. On the play, his fellow co-captain Gabriel Uno was credited with an assist.
Carolina came into this match with a 13-2-3 record, while the Eagles came in 11-4-8. In the first half, JU outshot the Bruins 6-4.
Out of halftime, Carolina put some pressure on the Eagles down in the game, but the JU defense was up to the task as they have been all season long.
Of the 11 total shots Judson had, Uno posted six of them. In the second half, he nearly put in a goal that would been a two goal lead for Judson. Uno's heart of a champion has willed this team all year long. His play has been a backbone for this team.
Over the course of the final 15 minutes, Judson withstood some major goal chances from the Bruins, but were able to deny them all. In goal, Ivan Dominguez was good again. Only credited with two saves, it was fittingly another shutout for the sophomore. It was his 12th shutout of the season. Exactly 50% of the games this season, Judson shutout their opponents on the scoreboard.
With the 1-0 victory, it is Judson's first NCCAA National Championship since 2009, and seventh overall in program history.
Respect the Legacy. Write the Future.
Trevisan was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Tournament as named by the NCCAA. He and teammate Matheus Duarte Torres were also named to the All Tournament Team.
Congratulations to the Eagles. The 2024 NCCAA Division 1 Men's Soccer National Champions.
