Ojesto Wins NCCAA and CCAC Defender of the Week; Chavez wins CCAC Offensive Award
Elgin, IL. Key contributors to a pair of victories during the week of Oct. 3-9, Judson University's Samuel Chavez and Mateo Ojesto were honored for their efforts on Tuesday when the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced the pair as the league's men's soccer players of the week. Additionally, Ojesto was named NCCAA Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
Chavez earned CCAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades after playing a role in five of the six Eagle goals scored over the seven-day period. The junior left backer totaled three goals and two assists for eight points over the two matches.
On Wednesday, Chavez authored two goals and two assists in the Eagles' 5-1 victory over Trinity Christian College. He then netted the only goal of the game in a 1-0 decision over Roosevelt University on Saturday.
"I'm yet to see someone that worked harder than Samuel during the off season to get here ready to go. His work ethic is outstanding, and it pays off. He has become a crucial player for us," said Head Coach Rafa Heck.
Ojesto, on the opposite end of the field, permitted just one goal in net to secure CCAC Defensive Player of the Week commendations. The freshman goalkeeper recorded six saves in the two games combined.
The only goal Ojesto allowed came in the Trinity Christian contest, where he totaled three saves. He then authored his second shutout of the season on Saturday, producing three more stops in the 1-0 victory.
For the season, Ojesto leads the conference in the least amount of goals allowed (5), while ranking second in goals-against average (0.83) and third in save percentage (.808).
"Mateo just arrived from Spain this year as a FR, and he has earned his starting spot in training on a day to day process. He has done really well for us since his first game as a starter, and this award is much deserved," said Coach Heck.
