Eagles Gut Out Victory on NYE
Elgin, IL - On the final day of 2024, the Eagles welcomed in the Grace Christian Tigers from Michigan. While the first five minutes looked a bit sluggish on both sides, the game was a competitive, back and forth contest all afternoon, with the Eagles pulling out a hard fought win 83-76.
JU came out playing tough defense, but their customary fast start on offense was missing on this day. When shots were not falling, they really had to weather the storm early on.
While Judson really never trailed in the first half, it was not smooth sailing. Freshmen George Bellevue played well inside the paint, taking advantage of a size advantage scoring 20 points and 8 rebounds. Bellevue was 9-14 shooting.
Also down low, Sam Ellis tallied a double-double posting 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Judson took an 11 point lead into half. But in the first 10 minutes of the second half, it was really Grace Christian digging in, and making shots to cut the lead down.
With the two teams constantly battling, and the Eagles in a way treading water, Grace Christian pushed through with a 71-70 lead with under five minutes to play. The Tigers biggest lead of the day of two points, came with 3:21 left to play.
But for the Eagles, it was mister consistent, Cee Jay Nwosu willing the Eagles back in front. The senior finished with 16 points.
Also with 16 points was Bronson Bartuch going 4-4 from three point range.
In the end, JU had a gut check moment getting the stops on defense when they had to have them. JU is now 4-8 as it turns to the new year.
The Eagles will start 2025 when they host CCAC opponent Trinity Christian on Saturday afternoon.
