Eagles Get Huge Road Sweep
Clinton, IA - The Eagles began their weekend series traveling to St. Ambrose, one of the teams just ahead of them in the closely contested CCAC standings. The two teams fought back and forth in two really competitive games this afternoon that Judson take both games in 8 innings.
In game one, Matt Johnston was dominant throwing 7 innings, and striking out 14 batters. Thanks to the Eagles comeback bid in the 7th inning, Johnston was able to earn his second victory on the season.
Down 2-0 after one, and 3-1 after two, Johnston kept the damage there while his teammates chipped away.
Kyle Schwartz got an RBI single in the 5th to make it a 3-2 game, and in the 7th, needing a run to tie, it was Schwartz again coming up with the game-tying sac fly.
Then in the 8th inning, Austin Stone scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.
While the Bees had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 8th inning, Daniel Alworth was able to close things out for his first save giving JU the comeback victory 4-3.
Daley Thompson was 4-4 in the contest for Judson.
In game two, the Eagles got out to a 2-0 lead and 4-2 lead, but in this game, the Bees were the ones to make the comeback and tie things up, forcing extra innings.
Kevin Flores and Alijah Acevedo had RBI singles to make it 2-0. Acevedo also started on the mound for JU and went 5 innings, allowing three runs, while striking out five batters.
The next pair of runs came from a Schwartz RBI single, and Ryan Pitzer sac fly.
Then in the 8th inning, in a tie game, it was the senior Thompson delivering a two run single to make it 6-4 Judson. Max Amendt got the win in relief pitching two innings with four strikeouts.
It will be a happy bus ride back to campus for the Eagles. They will get to sleep in their own beds after a late night, and face the Bees at home on Saturday at Hoffer Field to finish the series.
Currently, Judson is in fourth place in the conference standings with the teams all bunched up with 12 games to go.
