Eagles Swing Bats Well, History Made
Elgin, IL - On a day where the games should have been played across the boarder, the Eagles came out swinging against St. Ambrose this afternoon.
Today's games were scheduled for at St. Ambrose, but due to weather, the double header was moved to Hoffer Field, where the Bees were still the designated home team.
That did not stop the Eagles from swinging some aggressive, hot bats. In game one, JU tallied 17 hits. In game two, they had 13 more. In spite of the tough luck split, it was one of the Eagles more impressive days at the plate.
In game one, the Eagles hung on for an 11-10 win. Kyle Schwartz went 5-5 in the game with three runs scored.
Daley Thompson went 3-4 with a home run and 4 RBI's, and Zack Carpenter also went 4-4.
Benjamin Nelson belted a grand slam to put the Eagles ahead. In the game, he also stole his 75th career stolen base, tying the school record for the most career stolen bases.
On the mound, Brady Popovich got the win pitching 6 innings and striking out 5.
In game two, there was more big hits for JU.
Kyle Schwartz went 3-4, going 8-9 on the day.
Daley Thompson hit two more home runs, making it the second time this year that an Eagle has posted a three home run day joining Jake Angelo.
Giovanni Davila also added two hits.
And back to Benjamin Nelson. In game two, Nelson had two more hits, but also in the first inning, with a steal of third base, it gave Nelson the school record.
With now 76 career stolen bases, (and counting) it now makes him Judson's new record holder passing Nick Norris from 2010-2013.
While he was tagged with the tough loss, Jordan Harris pitched a whale of a ball game for the Eagles. In relief, he threw five innings, only giving up one hit, and one unearned run. He did walk five batters. After a tough error to lead off the 8th inning, when a sinking line drive that may have been effected by the sun started the inning for the Bees, a cork-screwing liner that just got passed a diving Schwartz was the lone hit allowed, and the difference in game two.
The two teams will play two more on Saturday afternoon, as the scheduled games at Hoffer Field.
